In the quiet corners of our minds, where vulnerability meets strength, lies the essence of The Ashna Project. Born from love, loss, and unwavering determination, this initiative seeks to create conversation and destigmatize mental health.
Ashna’s Story
Ashna Wagle was more than her diagnosis of bipolar disorder. She was a biology and chemistry student, a compassionate volunteer for children in need, and an ardent lover of art and music. Yet, her battle with mental illness persisted silently, casting shadows on her vibrant existence.
On December 16, 2021, Ashna ended her life by suicide. She left behind a void that reverberated through the hearts and minds of her friends and family. It is important to emphasize that she didn’t want to leave. She just didn’t know how to stay.
The Reality of Mental Illness
Since Ashna’s passing, her friends and family have been confronted with the stark reality of mental illness and the toll it takes on one’s mind. In the aftermath of her loss, we have embarked on a journey of understanding and education, delving deeper into the struggles and broader landscape of mental health.
Ashna’s absence has served as a reminder of the urgent need for greater awareness, empathy, and support for those impacted by mental health issues. Thus, The Ashna Project was born.
In her light we honor our mission of embracing mental health through open dialogue and encouraging purposeful living.
The Ashna Project: Our Foundation
The Ashna Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based out of North Texas that stands tall on three sturdy pillars: advocacy, education, and support. Each pillar serves as a cornerstone in our mission for purpose and conversation. The Ashna Project was founded with the intention of touching each individual, regardless of their diagnosis. Together, these pillars form the strong foundation upon which we learn, grow, and heal in our own way.
1. Advocacy
Ashna’s legacy inspires us to live with intention and use our voice for more. This involves aligning our actions with our values and contributing positively to the world. Through our initiatives, we explore ways to infuse advocacy into everyday life, whether through small acts of kindness, conversation, or larger community initiatives. It is our goal to advocate for mental health and illness while also presenting a variety of healing modalities.
2. Education
Our organization intends to be a wellspring of both knowledge and inspiration. Introducing topics such as mindfulness, coping strategies, self-care, resilience, and grief. The Ashna Project hopes to illuminate the multi-dimensional ways of navigating mental health and healing. We will provide resources to those directly suffering from a mental illness, as well as those who are learning how to support those who are hurting.
3. Support
The Ashna Project stands as a beacon of hope, challenging the stigma surrounding mental health. We recognize that thriving requires seeing individuals beyond their diagnoses. By sharing stories, fostering empathy, and promoting understanding, we aim to dismantle barriers that prevent open conversations about mental well-being.
